The New Face of Gaming ?

As we all know, in the world of gaming, Nintendo is the ruling power.  They control the market now, overthrowing Microsoft and Sony and reigning victorious for some years now.  But is there a new competitor ?  A competitor who nobody sees as a threat.  A competitor called Apple.

Apple now has, through 3rd party developers, released over 42,000 games.  There probably are not as many as that because of demo’s released as games on the App Store.  This is a staggering figure for a company not even supposed to be in the gaming market.  iOS games such as “Temple Run” and “Angry Birds” have had many many downloads.  These games have become their own franchises because of iOS gaming.

Furthermore, because of iOS gaming companies such as the makers of Angry Birds, Rovio, have posted great profits lately.  Now because of iOS gaming Rovio have estimated $100 million in profits.  This will surely show us that iOS gaming is not just rubbish which can be walked over, especially as Nintendo, last year, posted their first ever loss with absolutely no profit, this must be because of iOS games and not because of a great increase in people buying Microsoft XBox’s and Sony PS3’s and their own games.

Now we see that PC games on disks are dying.  On the Mac App Store there are now games which are more advanced than those PC games you can buy anywhere.  Today I noticed that there are now multiple 3rd person shooters on the App Store.  Also, companies like Ubisoft and others have been releasing games on the App Store.  Game series such as the “Need For Speed” series are also being released on the App Store.  There are so many more games being released.

I believe that this could be a real threat to Nintendo but mostly Sony and Microsoft as they are the two smaller of the 3 main gaming companies today.  Over the past few years everything that Apple has touched has turned to gold as they seem to have the midas touch, if they did happen to enter the gaming market could they survive?  Could they kill Microsoft or Sony, I do not believe Nintendo can be totally killed any time soon as they have such as grip on the market and have such strong franchises in Mario and Zelda.  I am not sure if Apple will enter within the next few years but this is food for thought.

Game developers in total for the App Store have made around $1 billion in revenue.  This is an astounding figure, although Nintendo brought in $12 billion revenue but that isn’t the point.  They could hypothetically have taken $1 billion from Nintendo.

If there are any hardcore gamers out there you will automatically be thinking, NO NO NO, that is not gaming !!!!  Really think about that.  What is the point of gaming ?  Why do we have gaming ?  Is it not all about the fun and enjoyment brought out from games.  If it is about graphics then how is the Nintendo Wii such a success.  The Wii is not about graphics and it has sold so many thousand more consoles than Sony or Microsoft.  This is why Nintendo is a success and that is why App Store and iOS gaming is going to be and is already a success.

I think that iOS gaming is going to be more than a success.  Could they compete with Sony or Microsoft or (dare I say it) Nintendo ?  I think they can and I think they will.

  1. Wise up, the “games” apple create are hardly true games, they are what you call “mini games” The only way they will truely enter the gaming market is if they release a console, I think you are just getting a tad exited, honestly would you ever just realise that Apple are not a gaming company, their games ARE mini games and even if they released a console it would cost like, 1000000 pounds like most of their products.

  2. Just another point to make. “Nintendo, last year, posted their first ever loss with absolutely no profit, this must be because of iOS games and not because of a great increase in people buying Microsoft XBox’s and Sony PS3′s and their own games.” That is an absoloute lump of sugar, not only that, it is a misleading outlook, not only that it is an outlook you would expect some 16 year old apple fanboy who knows absoloutly nothing about gaming to make. Nintendo lost because of a few things.

Firstly the Economic climate. The Wii is on its last legs, there has been a great decrease in games released for the console as Nintendo are soley foucusing on the Wii U, this means they have used lots of money, maybe even thousands in developing this new console while not receiving much income from the Wii.

Secondly the Wii’s price has dropped below 100 pound in many places and sales have decreased, obviously a know it all like you would come to the conclusion that it MUST be IoS that has done this, which is utter hogwash, the wii has sold sooo much that everyone who wants one has one, this decrease in sale is also very misleading, did anyone actually think Nintendo could keep selling the way they did, especially with the release of a new console, but no, they arn’t selling well because of Ios, because that MUST be the only answer.

Thirdly and finally it is time you done some actuall research before making some blind statement that “this must be because of iOS games ” iOS hasnt contributed any to Nintendo’s loses, stop being a blind apple fanboy and look at actual real life situations before writing such idiocy.

  3. Another point… “Nintendo brought in $12 billion revenue but that isn’t the point”

How is that not the point, one minute your saying they are broke, next they bring in 12 Billion, why do you say how apple have a “midal touch” blindly ripping of the great Seamus Heaney, but when Nintendo have a great succsess that is not the point???

“Now we see that PC games on disks are dying.” Care to elaborate? Another statement with no proof to back it up.

“the two smaller of the 3 main gaming companies today” They both have alot more money in circulation than Nintendo due to their other areas of expertise, one more silly statement.

“Apple now has, through 3rd party developers, released over 42,000 games. There probably are not as many as that because of demo’s released as games on the App Store. This is a staggering figure for a company not even supposed to be in the gaming market. iOS games such as “Temple Run” and “Angry Birds” have had many many downloads. Did we really need a repeat of this paragraph, I think we go the idea the first time… And as you say lots are demos, not staggering at all considering they are not actually Video games. Which seems to be what you think they are.

I think I am finished now. Good day.

    • That was not the point that I was trying to make Jim. I never said they were broke, now you are the one making wild accusations. Firstly it is a “midas touch” and that was not created by Seamus Heaney, Midas touch comes from Greek Mythology so “it is time you done some actual research.”

I shall elaborate, now they era of not only PC games but disks in general is nearing an end, before disks were slots then the disks we now know and use but the Cloud is coming, cloud gaming is going to take over and it has started with the PC games. Anyone with an iMac, Macbook Pro or Macbook Air can get most games now on the Mac App Store as now that is where the companies are releasing their games, not on disk for the PC’s.

They have a lot more money altogether but in the gaming world (which this post has been about) not the general tech world Nintendo is winning with more units sold making them have more money.

What is a video Game Jim ? Is Picmin a what you would define “proper” game ? (of course you are going to say yes you are a Nintendo Fanboy).

      Have I touched a nerve Jim Fitz ? 😉

      • That is how the “Point” came accross and you know it. If you had never read Thatcher by Heaney you would never have used that phrase therefore I know you didn’t use because of your great Knowledge of Greek Mythology.

Also even in the Gaming world right now as you stated Nintendo have made loses, that is your speak, not mine, why change your mind so much? Microsoft are currently outselling Nintendo by a lot, thats a fact, something you don’t know the meaning off.

A video game is a game that actually has meaning, it has a story, and lasts more than 5 minutes, it is played on a console or a gaming computer, not an Ipad, nor a mac.

I have no more replies for you, you get more arrogent and more blinded by your fanboyiness every post, A certain other poster called Calyvn has already pointed that out in another post, You make statements with nothing to back it up, if your going to be a successful bloger you should NEVER insult your readers even if they insult you.

I am not a Nintendo fanboy. Thirdly I am not some 16 year old fanboy, I have been playing video games for many more years, when you were in Nappys I was winning super mario World and playing classics like Micro-machines which are actually video games, not a mini-game, I shall never, read nor comment on this pathetic blog again. I could do without such Liers, you really must hire somebody who knows about video games, for you know so little.

        Good day.

  4. Firstly Jim that is untrue, they are not “mini games” many of them are full 1st and 3rd person shooters. They vary in difficulty and are made so that people of all ages can enjoy them. Of course I know Apple is not a gaming company that is why I stated it is the 3rd party developers creating these games. If there was no way of making money and getting games out through iOS devices then Ubisoft and others would not have started making games for them. I think you are getting excited Jim it won’t cost “1000000 pounds.” I think your problem with this is that you are afraid of some actual competition with Nintendo, competition that they haven’t been getting in a long time. If it was simply the economic climate the games on iOS would be failing also but that isn’t happening, nay Apple is not failing, they are thriving. If “everyone” already had a Wii they wouldn’t be selling any units at all if you are taking what you said literally. That it is an outlook you would expect some 16 year old Nintendo fanboy who knows absoloutly nothing about iOS to make.

  5. No Jim I didn’t know it and i’m sorry for that. So I don’t know the meaning of Microsoft outselling someone, i know that concept well, if you remember back to the 1980’s and 1990’s Microsoft outsold everyone. Many has a story line and last longer than 5 minutes, Fifa 2010 World Cup for example lasts a long time. How do you know that Jim, do you know who I am. A gaming computer being a Windows PC ? It works on Mac as well Jim.

Also there are games like Pong, Pacman, Missile Command and others (full versions) on the App Store so really you are saying that they are not games which in fact they are as they are great, classic games.

Ok then Jim then don’t insult me, to be honest i’m getting sick of it and will ban you ! I am giving my point of view and these replies are to give yours but lets not get angry at each other i’m happy you are reading continually and showing your point of view and I thank you for it and I wouldn’t want to ban such a loyal poster but if this continues I will.
