There are many well-loved video game characters.  These animations have brought so much joy and fun to so many people over many years.  Some characters are 25 years old now and still staying strong in the gaming world.  These characters were created for different consoles and companies such as Nintendo, Namco and Konami.

Here is a countdown from 20 down to the Number one Video Game Character of All-time:

20.  Prince of Persia

This video game was originally created for the Apple II computer in 1989.  There have been 8 game releases and one movie release in 2010.  We are not told the Prince’s name until the we see the movie in 2010 (based on “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time”) when he is called Dastan.

The  Prince of Persia series have been very popular with gamers and are world-renowned for a series of great games!  The games have been released on Apple II computers and other console such as Sony’s Playstation consoles.

19.  Ryu Hayabusa

Hayabusa is a well-loved ninja warrior who appears in both the Dead or Alive series and also in the Ninja Gaiden games.  His first game was Ninja Gaiden in 1988.  He is sometimes referred to as the “Dragon Ninja” as he is not totally human.  He is often seen as the most popular ninja character to be ever featured in video games and I would agree with this statement.

18.  The Hammer Bros.

The Hammer Bros. were first seen in Super Mario Bros.  They are Koopas who stand upright, have hammers and also wear helmets.  They were listed in CNET’s top 8 most under-rated characters and that is why they are here, they are under-rated characters.  They are very well known characters and have been in many Mario games and also others.  They also appear in Nintendo comic books.

17.  Banjo and Kazooie

Banjo is a brown (male) bear and Kazooie is a red (female) bird who is always kept in Banjo’s backpack.

Banjo-Kazooie was originally published by Rare and released for the Nintendo 64.

16.  Dr. Robotnik / Eggman

Eggman or Dr. Robotnik is the main villain in the Sonic series.  He was in the first ever Sonic game which was released for the Sega Mega Drive.  This evil character has been a favourite villain of many people but also one of the best developed characters in gaming ever.  Need we say any more about this legend of gaming !?!

Eggman also is in the T.V Series “Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog”.

Will Eggman ever catch a break and finally beat Sonic and friends ?

15.  Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong was developed by many companies; Nintendo, Rare, Namco, Paon and Retro Studios.  His first game called “Donkey Kong”  (you didn’t guess that one) was released on 9th July 1981.  This was a very important game for Nintendo as it was the first ever game to feature their main character to this day, Mario, the Italian plumber.  Donkey Kong was against Mario in this game and so both Donkey Kong and Mario were born.

14.  Yoshi

Yoshi is the most famous dinosaur fictional character (probably the most famous dinosaur ever!!) who will eat anything with his extendable tongue.  He was first featured in 1990 in Super Mario World and his character grew from there on.  Yoshi is another of Miyamoto’s creations.  He also created Mario and Luigi, Link, Zelda and many more.  He is Mario’s trusty companion and also features in the Super Mario World TV Series.

13.  Solid Snake

Solid Snake is a character from Konami’s Metal Gear series.  Solid Snake is a very well know character in the gaming world.  His first game was released in 1987.  He is a soldier, spy, mercenary and many more.  He is ruthless but a great character who i’m sure we have not seen the last of yet.

He is a great character and he makes the Metal Gear series that much better.

Captain Falcon is simply a legend.  He appeared for the first time in F-Zero in 1990 and has been around ever since, infiltrating the Super Smash Bros. Series as one of the most formidable characters you can face.  He is definitely one of my favourite gaming characters ever and I think he will stay there for a long long time.

He has been the 25th best character to ever feature in a Nintendo game.

10.  Kirby

Kirby (who was originally called Popopo) is a loveable pink ball of fun if you are a gamer.  Do not be deceived by those little red cheeks, Kirby is not just a character for 7-year-olds.  He has complex moves and features heavily in Nintendo games as it is one of their leading franchises.  Kirby is difficult to beat in any situation for any level of gamer.

Kirby’s first game was called Kirby’s Dream Land in 1992.

9.  Luigi

Luigi is the brother of Mario, the most well know character ever.  He is also a plumber and has many very good attacks and defences in every game he is in.  Being honest, I do prefer Luigi to Mario.  He is a great character and definitely deserves to be in the top 10 characters ever in video gaming history.  Miyamoto also created Luigi and did a stunning job of it also.

8.  Knuckles

Knuckles is one of Sonic’s friends.  He is a fight first, think-later Echidna.  He is one of the best characters ever and all Sega fans out there will know he is an amazing character.  He was first seen in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 from 1994.

6.  James Bond

James Bond is most well known for Movies and Ian Flemming’s classic books, but one of  James Bond’s games, ” Goldeneye” was one of the most legendary, revolutionary greats of all gaming history.  He is not often thought about but he is a great game character not only for Goldeneye but also for other games such as James Bond Nightfire and others also.

Goldeneye was released for the Nintendo 64.

5. Sam Fisher

Sam Fisher is the main character in all of the Splinter Cell games.  He was originally working for “the good guys” as he was Lieutenant Commander and was a member of the Third Echelon but then, after the death of his daughter went rogue.  He is a master of espionage and of getting in and out quickly.  If you can get him to the objective he carry out any objective better than any other agent you have ever met.

In the game, Sam’s daughter Sarah was killed by a “drunk driver” in 2008. However, it was established that the death of his daughter was no accident. After learning this, Fisher attempts to uncover why his daughter was murdered, and what connections it has to Third Echelon, which is not doing its job at the time and has become corrupt.  It is soon revealed that Sarah is alive and would have been used as leverage to frame Sam for an unsuccessful coup against the U.S President.  This is when he turns rogue on Third Echelon and trusts nobody.

His character is well used and developed, a great character in every sense.

1.  Mario

Mario is probably Nintendo’s finest creation and largest franchise.  It is best known name in the gaming industry.  Mario is but sheer brilliance in every way.  He has been created to be a loveable character which is not disliked by anyone.  The finest design creation in all of video gaming history.

He was first seen in Donkey Kong (No 15) in 1981 but his first game was Mario Bros. in 1983 which was an arcade game.  He has so many games now which are all great hits with people of all ages.  He is renowned worldwide for being the best ever games character ever.  He just has to be no 1 in this list.

  1. Replace Hayabusa with Peach and that would be a decent list. And Sam Fisher, pity you didn’t get a photo from his games such as Chaos Theory, thats when he was at his best.
